How much student loan are you entitled to?
Firstly, you’ll need to know an estimate of how much you’ll be able to borrow from Student Finance England (SFE). They’ll provide you with a maintenance loan to help you with your living costs while you’re studying. The amount you receive will depend on the following:
- Whether you live in London
- Your (parent’s) total household income
- If you’ll be living with or away from your parents
Students who live in London can be entitled to a larger loan as this reflects the higher living costs in the area. However, wherever you live, your household income – sometimes referred to as your parent’s income – will still be taken into consideration. The more your parent or parents earn, the less you may receive. The reasoning behind this is that wealthier families have a better ability to support their children throughout their studies, while children from lower-income families might need more help.
You can get a maintenance loan up to a total amount of £10,227 if you’re living away from your parents and outside of London (academic year 2024-2025). The minimum amount you can get is £4,767.
